Is Florastor good to kill yeast infections, since it is a yeast also?

by Brandon
(Ohio)

I took Florastor earlier in the year, and I can't believe how gassy and sick I got. Took several days after stopping it, before my system calmed down. I've had ongoing digestive issues, bloating, gas and constipation for decades. I had a chiropractor tell me years ago that I had candida. I'm wondering if the Florastor was actually flushing out bad yeast and bad bacteria, and that is why it made me feel terrible? I'm taking the Profase now.

Florastor contains 500mgs of the yeast Saccharomyces boulardii which years ago was shown to have anti-candida effects. However, it can and does cause yeast infections in some individuals. When it does the strain that is identified is always Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The two strains are almost genetically identical, so much so that S. boulardii is considered to be the commercial supplement name for Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

It has recently been determined that up to 60% of Saccharomyces cerevisiae infections were caused by taking Saccharomyces boulardii.

Quite frankly, we do not recommend S. boulardii to anyone that has any type of yeast issue for any reason. However, if you suffer from chronic diarrhea caused by bad bacteria, it can often stop the diarrhea. Typically that is what it is used for, but it sometimes causes an infection in these individuals.

We have written a page on Saccharomyces cerevisiae here with studies to prove that what we are saying is true if you would like to take a look.
