Is probiotic kefir good for you while on the Candida diet?

by blaze

Here I have a question regarding yeast, as we know we shouldn't consume yeast products on candida diet, but many people recommend (and even on this site) milk kefir. As we know milk kefir has many strains of yeast, even most common one we find in bread and beer.

That suppose to mean no milk kefir even thoough it is a good probiotic food?

kefir
by: Dan

Kefir contains beneficial bacteria that are helpful for controlling Candida yeast. It also contains Saccharomyces cerevisiae, which is commercially known as S. Boulardii. There are quite a few anti-candida supplements on the market that contain this yeast because it does have anti-candida effects. More information about S. boulardii can be found on this webpage.

Saccharomyces cerevisiae, S. boulardii can and does infect some people, but it is also very good for treating chronic diarrhea, IBS, Crohn's disease, C. difficule infections, H. pylori, and it seems to help with chronic inflammation of the gut.

We have had many reports over the years from people that have used kefir while treating themselves for Candida yeast. Some had very good success; others reported that it made them bloat. Because most people do not medically test themselves to see if Candida is over grown in their intestines, we suspect that those that have bad reactions actually have SIBO. In these cases, adding the extra bacteria and yeast before a person has treated themselves for too much bacteria in their small intestine, increases the bacteria levels even further, leading to severe bloating.

Bottom line, if you know for a medically proven fact, that you have Candida over growth in your intestine, kefir might help you. If the problem is over grown bacteria in the small intestine, it might make things worse.

3 questions about kefir
by: b-boy

I have some interesting questions on this topic:

1. What if there is a presence of both SIBO and Candida, is then Kefir good or bad? (It makes you bloat, but also helps with Candida at the same time)

2. The one question that I am really baffled is about Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, aka bakers yeast and all the propaganda against consuming yeast with Candida overgrowth. So if that yeast helps with Candida, it means I can eat black/brown or sourdough rye bread without a problem?
(I'm really craving for bread though :)

3. What do you think about the naturally grown, wild homemade yeast from just flour and water that can be used for making a sourdough bread?

Thank you Dan for your effort,
seems like you are a real expert :)

Question 1.

If you have sibo I would not be consuming kefir because sibo is an over growth of bacteria in the small intestine. You need to knock those levels down first, not add to them. Just the fact that it makes you bloat tells you it is not a good idea.

Question 2.

Although sourdough rye bread is one of the best breads you can consume, you are still talking about 21 grams of carbs per slice and those are simple carbs, not complex carbs. Simple carbs turn to sugar when digested and that would feed Candida. You could consume 3 cups of fresh broccoli, which is a lot better for you, and would probably give you a much fuller feeling than that one slice of bread.

Question 3.

I don't have any thoughts on home made yeast for bread. But I do suggest you don't consume bread on the Candida diet. I also tend to suggest you don't consume kefir or other yeasts either, that includes S. boulardii. But, you are your own doctor so you have to do what you feel is the best for you.

kefir and constipation
by: b-boy

When I started with kefir I feel better and have more energy, I feel less tired and I've been drinking it for a month now, but I didn't take any gastro test. I am little bloated and gassy but taking in exchange all the good feelings, that bloating doesn't bother me much, I can say overall I feel much better.

There is only one problem I noticed I was severely constipated for some time and had very hard stool, and that started since kefir. I solved this with increasing the amount of laxative food, like flax, then it is pretty normal.
I probably drink about 300-400ml per day on average, I don't measure it I have a big jar in my fridge..

Do you have any idea why kefir is making me constipated, is that the nature of kefir?

Much thanks...

Our Answer

Initially, if you are not used to taking probiotics it can make you constipated. But usually after a week everything breaks loose and the person goes back to normal.

Quite possibly, the Saccharomyces cerevisiae in the kefir is making you constipated. Saccharomyces cerevisiae - S. boulardii is commonly used to stop chronic diarrhea. It could be plugging you up.
